lovers, you and I

there is no reason we can not be lovers, you and I

yet in perpetual motion, we dance around the question

we eye each other at a distance, unblinking, beckoning

but never cross the river of our fantasies to touch

there is no reason we can not be lovers, you and I

yet we will pass in the street with no recognition

have casual conversations about other peoples’ lust

wake in tangled sheets wet with sweat and musk

there is no reason we can not be lovers, you and I
